A Christmas Giveaway!

Update 12.15.13: The winner was Melinda of The Refeathered Roost! Thanks to all who entered!

Every year since 2009, I have had great success on Etsy with my burlap and linen ragball ornaments. I am so blessed that year after year so many people want to buy them. I start getting requests in August usually! Since having children, I haven't had much time to work on my Etsy shop, but I always make sure to offer some of these babies for people to adorn their trees.

This year, however, something disheartening happened. Two new shops popped up on Etsy using the photograph above to list in their shops. My mom found the stolen images while searching on the site and quickly alerted me to this. I was dumbfounded by the first one. Angry even. I immediately went to facebook to protest. How dare someone steal my photograph! The outrage! I wrote to the shop owner telling her to immediately remove it or I would report her. She did. But I couldn't stop thinking about it and feeling frustrated and angry.

After a few hours with that...I felt God urging me to remain calm. To trust that he was in charge. To remember that he is my defender and all of my gifts, talents and success only come from him anyway. He also showed me how much I "enjoy the drama" of situations like this. All of the friends and relatives chiming in with similar disgust at the theft. I realized then...that is not how I want to live. I want to live in peace. Not drama.

So..when the second shop popped up again selling with my photograph (although slightly cropped)...I had a very different reaction. I could hear in my spirit the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Maybe, God was going to remove the success of these ragballs from my life since I held on to it so tightly? I didn't know. But I prayed and thanked him for all the success for the previous years. I wrote the second shop asking that the image be removed and within a little while it was (although she had already sold some of them with my photo).

I am not certain what the lesson is in all of this...maybe to watermark everything (oh the inconvenience! and this image has been out there and all over pinterest now for so many years)? Maybe...though...the true lesson is to know that our gifts and success are all to glorify God. And in every action give him the praise. So in, honor of that, I have decided to have a little giveaway this holiday season. I will be giving away one of my sets of 9 ragball ornaments (a $45 value) in white linen, natural linen and burlap. You can enter a variety of ways, and I truly hope, whoever wins enjoys these on your tree!

  1. Hello dear Alice... you are so kind to take these things as calmly as you are now... I have been livid over people taking photos of mine and calling them their own (although mine were not anything I had for sale)... it especially hurt that someone took all of my photos of Tessy without asking and posted them as her own if you can believe it... you are an angel here on earth dear Alice... always kind... and forgiving... and turning a bad situation into a good one... I would love a chance to be entered into your generous giveaway for your ONE OF A KIND original rag ball ornaments... I am a loving follower of your blog as well... excited to see your Christmas decorations... love to you... doggie kisses to Renoir... xoxo Julie Marie

  2. Hello Alice! This post actually has inspired me to start my own blog.....something I've secretly wanted to do for a long time.....
Anyway, I shared this post via Facebook, pinned on Pinterest, started following on Blogger thru google friend connect, (which was sooo easy, and sparked a fire in me about blogging even more) and now I'm rambling on in your comments, lol. Well I hope all this hard work pays off for me because I LOVE seeing all the precious creations you have come up with :) I think this is the answer He was looking for from you :) I know its hard at times, but its best to try and find the good in everything bad that comes our way....and you've gone beyond that by creating a "good" from your yucky situation. Take care!

I've made these rag ornaments last year but mine aren't nearly as sweet as yours. I'd love to pile YOURS on top of mine an enjoy the pretty ones.

  7. I would love to enter dear Alice. I am sorry for what you went through. I wonder why my first reaction is to retaliate when I have been wronged when I know that is not pleasing to God. I am praying for a quiet and gentle spirit this season...and to keep it the rest of my life.
    Hugs dear one...

  12. I will ask again, what is wrong with people? Stealing images is not cool - in fact it does disgust everyone. I'm so sorry this happened to you. It has happened to a lot of my friends and it seems to be happening more and more. I love your attitude and how you handled this situation.

I adore your rag ornaments, hope you have some left!!!

  13. Large corporations have a team of attorneys to go after people who steal their brands, but sadly, there is little recourse for the average person when it comes to digital theft, even identity theft. It's infuriating, but it is what it is.

On a positive note: Pretty ornaments.

  20. Hi Alice,
I am new to your blog, and just love your sense of style and creativity! I have an Etsy shop, too, and though I haven't had sellers take my photos, I have had them steal my ideas...down to the very last detail. I certainly understand all the emotions that go along with it, sweetie. It's not a fun feeling at all. What God has shown me is that they can take, but He will always give me more than they could ever take away. And onto the next fun thing I go! That's what is so wonderful about being creatively lead by God. I want you to know that I could have spent an hour going through your blog! It is lovely, your children are precious, and I sense that you have a really sweet spirit. Can't
wait to see what you post next!!

I would love a set of your wonderful rag ornaments!! Please enter me!!
    Have a blessed Christmas season!!
    Hugs,
    Becky

  32. I have been blogging since 2007 and used to follow you faithfully but somehow, ibthink when Google began changing everything, i lost you. So glad to find you again! And you have two children now. The last i remember was your first born as a baby. I too have an etsy and have had things stolen. It is very disheartening, all the copying but the Lord always tells me to let it go and continue on in peace. To cultivate peace so it is nice to hear you sharing the same. That you are hearing and doing what he whispers into your heart. The Lord will bless the poor in spirit...the meek...the peacemakers. He leads me to take the low road and to live quietly, gently. I am not here to enter to win your kind Giveaway just to tell you to keep calm and carry on in His love.
