Choosing a Rug for the Transition From Toddler to Big Girl

I have partnered with Rugs USA for this post. All expressed opinions are 100% my own.

My daughter Hazel will be five this summer. I can't believe how fast the time from toddler to preschooler went by. Her brother, Owen, was born when she was 15 months old, so she only had her own room for a very short period of time. For the past few years they have shared the smaller of our two bedrooms, but just recently, we moved them into the master bedroom to give them more space for toys and creating their own individual sides.

Hazel is so excited to have her own "big girl" room and we have been planning together how to decorate it. Today, I am sharing the first piece of the puzzle...her new area rug.
Here are some important facts about Hazel: she's a total girly-girl who loves pink and could play Barbies all day long. She tells me she wants her room to be "all pink and purple with Barbies and unicorns and rainbows and hearts and stars..." etc. etc. etc. She has a lot of ideas. Let me tell you.

I think of my role in the process as corralling those ideas and interests into a unified space that gives her room to play and shows off her individual style. A tall order with all of the things she loves. (Did I mention she also has a thing for wolves? How to fit those into this room...hmm. A dilemma for another day.)

I decided on a rug first because I wanted to warm up the space and cover a large portion of the pine floors on her side.

When I found the Kids Zone Playtime Beach House Rug available from Rugs USA, I knew it would probably be right up her ally. When I showed it to her she was in love,"Yes! That is the one! I want it! I want it!"

At first, I must admit, I hesitated a bit because I had these hopes of making a "cool, eclectic boho" girl space in neutrals and muted colors. I slept on it for a few days and then just kept coming back to the fact that this was the one that would bring her joy. And hours of fun doing what she loves the most.
The rug goes perfect right next to Barbie's condo and pop-up camper. Hazel has been having so much fun setting it all up and deciding who lives in which rooms. It has a road, lots of bedrooms, a kitchen and living room, even a pool and on the opposite end: the beach.
All of her Barbies and dolls are making themselves right at home on the new rug. Lots of pool parties and picnics, cook outs, etc.
And as much as he doesn't like to admit it, Owen really likes playing on the new rug too (even if it is pink...his least favorite color on the planet).
We still have a lot of plans to work out for Hazel's space including a new big girl bed and deciding on bedding. Then attempting to declutter some of the toys (ha!) and organizing all of her girly-girl belongings.

For now though, she is already loving it. She even told me it was her dream come true. Not gonna lie: it brought tears to my eyes! I love making my kids happy and creating spaces for them to be themselves, have fun and enjoy these little years.

Till next time...

  1. Awww, that brought tears to my eyes as well! Her dream come true! That rug looks like so much fun Alice, no wonder she loves to play on it! I think my daughter Amelie would love to play with Hazel on it, she's really into Barbies as well ;) I love how the rug adds so much cozyness to the room and the bookshelf in the back looks lovely!

  2. This is so cute! My daughter would have loved something like this when she was little!

  3. Sounds like quite the project is underway!
