Revamping My Blog and in Need of Your Input!

My baby Violet is almost eight months old already (can you believe it?), and I have been on "blogging maternity leave" almost the entire time. But with her getting older, taking more regular naps and a desire to return to my creative outlets, I am ready to get back to blogging.

But I think some changes are in order to make this blog more functional and that is where I need your help.  I'm looking for input from anyone who stumbles upon this little blog of mine, but particularly if you are a regular reader. I would LOVE to cater my changes to best serve you.

I am planning, once and for all, on moving to a self-hosted Wordpress site. I have known for years that I should do this but it seemed like such a daunting task that I continually put it off. Blogger is free and seemed simple enough for the longest time, but it has a lot of issues that I cannot change. It is very limited in making my site user friendly. I would love to have categories and sub categories for you guys to be able to click through and find my content easier. Basically, I would like to have layout that allows you to get to the posts and information you want as quickly as possible.

This move will also likely include a new design and several other changes....where I fine tune what my blog is all about.

So this is where I need your help. Tell me what you want improved as I revamp my blog.

What do you want to see more of? Less of?

What makes you come back to my blog?

How could I improve your experience?

Don't hold back...I can take it! After all, this blog would be nothing without you. I really want you to be honest and give me feedback that I can use to improve my readers' overall experience.

I know there are so many plugins over on Wordpress, which kind of terrifies me....I am clueless when it comes to those! For my fellow bloggers...what are the must haves? Give me the scoop!

And lastly, let me know what type of posts you are most interested in. My time is very limited with three little ones, so my goal is to work smarter, not harder. I want to continue to share my personal thoughts on life, home décor, diy projects with you but would love to have your feedback as to what you want to see the most!

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give. I truly appreciate it and will take it all into account as I make these future changes. I will also keep you in the loop as they come about. It will likely take several months, but I am excited for the fresh start and hope you will be too!

Till next time...
~Alice W.

  2. Yay Alice!

Gah, new site designs are so much fun - and I guarantee you'll loveeee Wordpress so much!

Jetpack is my go to for Wordpress - it actually holds more power than I thought. With jetpack you get assistance in maintaining spam comments. First two plugins to install would be google analytics and Wordfence Security (prevents hackers from logging in).

I love your imagery and your writing, you are always engaging and inclusive. I think you need a site/template which highlights your creative eye and like you said, categorizes your topics. Whatever you do, it will be so fabulous :)

If you're looking for a theme in a pinch, I really recommend Solo Pine.

  3. I have been a follower of your blog for a long time, I'm glad to hear that you'll be posting again soon! My very favorite posts are your home decor and DIY projects/crafts.

As far as going to WordPress...you don't need to if all your looking for is menu and sub-menus. My blog is a blogspot blog and I have menus. So far I've been able to have everything I could have gotten in wordpress! Take a look: www.littlevintagecottage.com. If you want to talk more about anything with the blogspot blog format let me know!

    1. Thanks Tania! I really appreciate your input. I've always been on the fence about moving to Wordpress, but I have been doing some research and based on the changes I want to make it might be the way to go. I will definitely stop by your blog though and checkout your menus! I cannot figure that out on mine but I am having a lot of issues with the theme and template settings and currently can't edit them at all. So frustrating!

  4. Welcome, Violet, and welcome back, Alice!! I've missed your lovely posts, but I applaud you for taking a time-out to devote yourself to home and family for awhile.
I love your blog, but the one thing that has been a problem for me in the past is the fine print that you used--both size and heaviness of font. It's not too bad when I'm on the computer, but most of my blog reading is done on my phone and then it IS a problem. I'm sure I'm not the only reader "of an age" to appreciate larger bolder fonts. Other than that minor inconvenience, just keep doing what you've always done--enchant me with your decorator's eye and your imagination. I prefer decor to recipes, but that's just me.
Again, I'm so happy you're back.

    1. Thank you Judy! I will definitely work on adjusting the fonts! I hadn't even thought of that honestly...so thank you for bringing it to my attention. I am having an issue with editing my blogger template and settings, so I can't change it yet, but as soon as I get it fixed that will be the first on my list!

  7. I do not think people should be limited to ONLY decorating or ONLY crafting or anything like that. I prefer a variety of things to read on a variety of things--family, crafting, decor, furniture, vacations, photography, ...a cornucopia of things!
